West is toward the upper-left corner; south is to the middle-left.
As constructed, Memorial Amphitheater ended in a small plaza atop a retaining wall, with a granite balustrade on the edge. The following year, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added to this plaza.
The road running diagonally on the lower-right side of this image is Farragut Avenue. The road running slightly diagonally from the middle-center to the left is Porter Avenue. The road running diagonally from upper-left to middle-right is McPherson Avenue. The tree line beyond McPherson Avenue indicates the western boundary of the cemetery; beyond that is Fort Myer.
The circular drive with crossed pathways in the middle-left portion of the image is the Confederate Memorial. The V-shaped road above the amphitheater is Lawton Avenue; the slender shaft of the Spanish-American War Memorial can be seen at its apex. The V-shaped road coming in from the middle-right is Sigsbee Drive. The large round base from which the tall column protrudes is the USS Maine Mast Memorial.
The large star-shaped object in the upper right corner is the former Fort McPherson, one of a ring of earthen artillery forts built around Washington, D.C., in 1861 as part of the city's American Civil War defenses.
Memorial Avenue (just west of the amphitheater) is under construction; the northern segment can be seen coming off Farragut Avenue, but not the southern.
